Ping G400 Driver Review
Video Transcription
hi guys it's Rick shields down here at Qwest Golf Academy here at Prairie Sports Village got the new ping g400 driver to test I've got the whole range the three drivers the ions the fairway woods the hybrids and the crossover all the reviews will be coming soon but I'm starting with the ping Jie 400 driver just on its own I thought we saw a pink real launch was two years ago when they dropped the number they went from g30 and then the very next product came out with just ping Jie they said we're done with a number no more number they brought the number back with G 400 now and we see signs of the Jeep driving this but we see differences aplenty and this driver looks mean it is a real mean-looking thing I feel like in the last year two years of ping products there is definitely a changing of the guards at pink with I think the great-grandson of Seoul home of Karsten Solheim now has taken over and the lakhs of these new ping clubs look incredible so for as long as I know ping of always made incredible golf clubs and now the blending that with a mixture of incredible looks modern looks cutting-edge and this is no exception this is the standard G 400 driver there is an LS tech version a low spin tech so lower spin if you need it and that's that tech which I will testing that other videos they'll come soon don't worry but the G 400 is where I'm going to start what we see in similarities to the G driver we have turbulator across the top see little fins across the top to help reduce air flow but they've drawn thicker and there's not as long so they're actually a bit more pronounced as you look at them they look a bit more meaty bolder dragonfly technology across the back of the golf club the strip weight from the crown stuck it underneath there is still the vortex at the back which helps with air flow but now there's this new dimpling edge to the back of the golf club it's like a dimpled skirt to the back of the golf club that's helping again more airflow across this the heads of small massage it's not for sixty don't know the number of the size but again that's a way of reducing airflow I don't think they'll shout about the fact it's not for sixty because it might put a few people off it not being as forgiving but what they're saying is they're going to back it up with more weight back and as low as possible they're claiming the furthest back center of gravity of any driver on the planet and they've done that with a tungsten way and a high-density way in this copper way right at the back of the golf course we've got tungsten and high-density way as far back as possible and it's those two weight components what move in the LS tech and the SS Tech to help it quite differently but the head read identical the same we've got changeable lofts around the neck it goes up and down by one degree and it also goes up and down by 0.6 of a degree new shaft this is the tour shaft the normal shaft is actually Cotter when you look at it this way around so when the head is off when you spin it round actually goes black what's really cool I've got that in the hybrid and they the crossover but I'm not going to in the drives I've got the tall ones in the driver new feature is well multi compounds now we're going to feature much more on pink clubs believe they're dropping the ping the ping grit completely matches another any grip you want in different sizes right let's give this a hit I've got on GC quad I'm hearing real probably ones this is the ping Jie 400 I've tugged it a little bit left I'm absolutely crushed that felt awesome off the head and it's very different noise to what I would cut through the ping driver that was to 79 for 301 I thought I could hit it really well even though just slightly pulled it laughs spin rate and pretty low for the standard version and it came out well it came out very flat it sounded completely different so King driver that I know I've always known ping drivers to be very loud and pinky they didn't seem artsy more dead and they have done internally more work to make that sound dead I've actually really nice club head speed on that was 112 now I'm about 110 with the driver and I wasn't trying to hit that any harder and that was saying I was once well I'll take the averages at the end of the test let's go for the second shot you know just slightly pulled it again just offline I mean they just starting laughs not perfectly lied a little bit lower on the head that time it didn't it wasn't as good a hit men kiss and sequel at speeds are still fast you know just like they told both of those two there comes your started straight left off the face to six six carry you know to eight spin not as good that time ball speed just dropped a little bit you know one in eleven point seven you can see strike location they're not that far off sensitive modest it fell a long way off center let's go again yes there she is it took me a couple just to find out where that middle of the club is and that is smushed that's so awesome I love the sound of that then the one thing that typically taught me off ping drivers is that sound it's always quite it's too loud and pinky for me and certainly with the new kind of multicom multi component drivers dying to come out with the car but the vowel sound a little bit more dead and this has more of a dead sound I was a great flight looks more aligned spin rate was low on that one and about two and a half ball speed again and a college fee to get up at 111 and I'm not honestly trying to hit these particularly hard and I'm normally 110 club head speed so I can might be picking up a couple of extra ones here the club face on this as well is a forged face and they claimed it at 16 percent thinner they're forgiving even maximum ball speed what I like about ping they're kind of subtle about it the saying it might pick up and one mile per hour two miles per hour extra ball speed which equates like five yards that's okay it's been two years since you brought a product out so five-yard claim of distance is pretty spot-on I like that but I've always been a big fan of how Tinga ver have marketed themselves and never pushed it out too excessively it's a good shape head actually to shape that appeal smile a lot it does look very almost like Batmobile ass with it's all little features and stuff but it's not offensive all that is nailed I'm a big fan of that balls like that was nailed 1:13 for bed speed it does feel fast the head feels fast and that sounds like a dusting essentially to say but it feels like I can swing it much faster with it being slightly smaller with all of its little feature the reducing airflow don't feel fast 1:12 for that speed good straight location caught it a little bit higher on the face there spin rate drop down I think the still rate on the other tech will probably suit me most there's four ok golf shots the probably the second one was a little bit off-centered here and didn't perform quite as well but it's still a decent enough here that's it one more so just have to find a tee peg that right one more with the g400 one thing I've not mentioned yet is the head cover boxing-glove is with respect but it has kind of this mouth type look too at the end of it almost like a duck's beak to actually makes it quite easy to pull up on and off certainly put the club they had to cover back on again it's it's some fraction open actually it feels a little bit sure in the shaft but how do you like it feel like a controlled Golf Club yeah it has got a bit of meat in it as well yes this town is ridiculously better than ping drivers I've known in the past it's much dead of noise I think a lot of players will like that that was a tiny bit lower on ball club head speed 110 I'm definitely a virgin hide nuts you can see there from the five shots of one up to the right for slightly drawn to the left that's probably a little bit more much like draw shape coming back a smidge smidgen more than one used to a recent dates but look at strike locations and if we look at the averages across those five shots I didn't really enjoy that partly the second one that I didn't particularly hit great and it did come down on distance we look at the averages there so carry distance at 278 there was that real low one in there at 266 but the rest of them have been around 280 and even one popping into two nine two balls feed across the board at one six one point five on average not really dropping that much that high either so pretty good numbers on the ball speed a spin rate averaging 2478 was an average of the five shots I do think as the average is lower with a less tech I will test that next coming soon to two four seven Oh on the spin rate a look at club head speed one eleven point six that's pretty fast I reckon I've picked up like I would normally say on average at 110 I don't particularly feel the loosest I've ever felt today so it's not this I'm getting that buy any extra me doing anything anything different now so actually swinging the exactly same swing speeds I would do any driver and I'm much nearer to 110 normally that's reading there at one in eleven point six I'll do a head-to-head with that and a driver let's say an ethic and see if there's any difference in club head speed that'd be interesting to see I like that I thought that works well I thought performed really nice so the ball fights were good the sound was really impressive like really impressive sound and it looks smart so like stealth looking the ping massive big pink logo it's very arid on I make it's really big did well the forged face the thinness adjustability drug and flight simulators dimples vortexes got it going on high high intensity way at the box or high density way in the back shall say other tungsten weight sounds like it's got a lot of things going for it I think it's going to be incredibly popular driver again the kingi range has always been incredibly popular driver I'm now going to test the LS tech version which really would have replaced the AI driver a number of years ago I still feel like I wish they brought out and I driver the like I'd like the LS tech version to be the I 400 I do not be quite a cool little addition but it's not it's not to the roots and Gandhi 400 as the LS tech version I will be testing that next guys if you enjoyed the video hit like comment below what do you think the lots of the new ping default driver does it ticularly fancied you like the look of it or you're not a big fan let us know down below that was good I like that a lot I think there's going to be lots lots of good G 400 ranges boys like ping because they don't claim to go 20 30 yards further they just make small enhancements to improvement in performance and lots of enhancements to looks to make it look better and they've definitely done a good job of that the copper finish looks good right guys I'm going to move on to the LS tech version coming next stay tuned for that and then I do the I ins hybrids fairly was uncross over stay tuned for lots more of that come you need to my channel hit I'll subscribe on and we'll see you next time thanks for watching that was the pink g400 just a standard driver thanks for watching guys to see soon
Ping G400 Driver Review
Video Transcription
This is the full in-depth review of the ping G400 max driver this driver comes out six months later than the original G400 driver and it now offers the full 460cc had more weight towards the back we still got turbulator 's we still got dragonfly technology but there's now a forged based on this driver and they're claiming it's gonna increase ball speed I want to see how this driver performs on GC quad over three different days and not only that I've taken out on the golf course over the last two weeks to give you the most in-depth review and information around this club I'm also going to answer your questions in this video and I'm also going to give you a full conclusion of my thoughts around the ping Jie 400 max driver [Music] so only six months after the original ping g400 drivers came out ping have now introduced this G 400 max and the max comes from the size of the Hat this is the now full 460cc had where the original ping zhi 400 was only for 4-5 cc there's only 3% difference but it does make quite a large difference in head shaping because this max driver like the max irons that they've had out in the past he's very much geared around forgiveness that is the big story of this driver that it is the most forgiving driver out on the market this what ping declaiming and the way they've done that is it obviously introduces bigger head shape now but they've actually made it very long head shape as well so from front to back it has got a massive area of surface and then to double up on that they've actually added more tungsten weight to the back of the head to increase that launch angle to get up that forgiveness on/off sense of hit so the club doesn't twist as much it does look slightly different actually looks a little bit more premium even though the price is still the same this coming out into market is four hundred and thirty five dollars or 389 pounds which is the same price as you can pick up the G 400 when it first came out and hopefully in this video I'm going to answer the questions around the guy who's bought G 400 where does he sit when he's now looking at this G 400 max so apart from the size of the head and then weight that's moved further back they've also introduced a forged face and ping acclaim and this is a faster ball speed face off off sensitive the size is what it is it's absolutely massive as you'll set up behind the ball it's much thinner face from from top to bottom but I say way further stretch back it's got an adjustable neck sleeve I've just got this in 9 degree which I've test it in which I found the best numbers which I'll show in a moment and I've just been testing this in the our dealer tour X shaft so let me start by hitting and will give you the ball flight figures and I'm gonna talk a little bit more about when I took out on the golf course and what we see from the figures up on screen these are my optimal ball figures for driver now I don't massively expect this driver to fit perfectly into this this chart because really this driver isn't suited to me in my opinion I'm expecting this to a bit high and spin a little bit too much but actually when we put the ping Jie 400 max numbers into this we actually see it doing pretty well the things that we that highlight for me ball speed is just a touch on the low side so at 1 5 7 miles per hour launch angle is definitely higher than my average launch angle at 15 degrees the spin rate really surprised me because again as a driver where the center of gravity further back I expected from my club head speed to be getting a little bit more higher spin probably even nearer to two and a half thousand rpm but I wasn't I was actually getting very good numbers at 2,140 but the big things I did see is the height was really high 40 yards up in the air with 40 descent angle it was just up and just stayed hit but yet the carry distance wasn't affected my carry distance was still 279 for a 2 9/8 whole distance which is exactly what I'd like to see my driver distances go so then the question is well what what's it what's it like it you know what is wrong with this at the Munks I couldn't find anything from those numbers and when I look at the ball speed I was get the club head speed sorry I was getting 111 point five miles per hour from this size head I'm gonna compare those two numbers of the G 400 and minute but across the board everything else apart from that you know hit the nail on the head the loft was a little bit high but expected to do so because that way is further back in the head so kind of what was I losing I didn't I didn't see it felt forgiving it felt like it had maybe a little bit of a left shot in it a little bit of a left bias in GC quad testing over three different days but really I didn't I didn't see any problem with the driver at all and I felt like why did this not come out six months ago why was this not the original G 400 driver I think many people out there asking the same questions I'm gonna tell you little bit more about what think about I in a minute there are through in the G 400 as a comparison I hit shots on the same day between the two and I'm going to throw in the ball date an hour for G's G 400 and you can see there apart from the carry distance been a little bit up the numbers were pretty much the same as surprised me that I actually hit the G 400 higher and the same lofts I actually hit the G 400 higher which I was not Batson at all and on the forgiveness level just because of the shape of the head and size of the head I did feel like gee 400 max was slightly more forgiving on off since this it's all kids such a small amount I mean really is a tiny amount and so they're not looks at all what's happening with club at speed because the whole story around a smaller head is that pink line that was still offering massive forgiveness levels but you could pick up more bought a club head speed which would equate to more distance I found it to be a difference of less than one miles per hour I was swinging the G 400 original what less than one mile per hour faster than the G 400 max so so unbelievably tiny numbers why the important both next to each other apart from the the noticeable visual differences of the size of the head the numbers for me stacked up almost exactly the same so I took out on the golf course and I played two rounds of golf with this driver and I was maybe in two minds about how it was going to perform because I felt like in my head this driver shouldn't be suited to me yet the numbers I was thinking hey these are good numbers so took on the course and I actually played lake nona with it and it was a windy day a not a great day for the g 400 max in the wind and more importantly when the when the shot is in to wind the g 400 max just because of the launch angle just went up and stayed up and didn't really get any distance but I tell you what downwind oh my goodness this thing was a rock hit so here's some shots that I hit out at Lake Nona first hole this was into wind I hit high flighted shot and it just seemed to stall in the wind didn't seem to get me any real distance but I'm flipping back around on the 9th hole this is a par 5 downwind I absolutely annihilated this driver and to the extent when I hit 7-iron in to a par 5 it just went up and it went hit and it stayed here and it went for miles but that was just because of the flight and the height of the shot and I felt so confident hitting the head that was this size it didn't feel like hoes not really artistic fast or hard and there's some other shots just to notice a 10th hole I had to look fade around the corner and again with a driver that's got more forgiveness and certainly a weight further back I always find those a little bit harder to shame not this shaped it wonderful it hit that little bit of a fade round the corner into a prime position in the middle of the fairway hole 11 hit hit miss hit this was a bad strike it's a little bit more towards the heel I felt like letting go of the club but I actually just found fairway just knock off to the right side of the fairway but still in the fairway not the distance I wanted but I wasn't punished for a bad hit which is which is the big story around this driver but then the other holes down 16 absolutely annihilated again with it being downwind and also an 18 app so this crushed one not an issue at all but I'm not saying these are always perfect because there was some drives where I did a hit off line and it's not a fairway found at every single time so I played it a round at orange tree a very very tight golf course tremendously tight and I thought any driver that was going to suit me around that golf course might have been this just because of its forgiveness level and I found similar things again where I was hitting a little bit too high into the wind and it stall a little bit but when it was down windows absolutes bombing it there were shots though when I often hits it not perfect I would see a tendency of this driver just because of the shaping of the head and who it's aimed at for me it was going a little bit like but only a little bit it's not offensively left but I found it to be a little bit more left biased for me when I was hitting the driver but again some of the hits when it was downwind was just going forever now this all sounds super positive at the moment and it is if I'm honest but then it comes up with a question of well why the hell did they bring this out six months later why was this not this in the first place you know and I don't know the answer to this I just feel that when they brought out g400 what they should have done is had this is the original G 400 and then had the G 400 LS tech in a smaller size if you wanted to and now have the G 400 max in an inner SF tech because that's another club if someone's gone out there and bought an SF Tech which is typically an anthe slice club why not make the bigger headed club into an ante slice club it just didn't seem to make sense to me the one thing though that I did definitely notice out on the golf course and in the studio this driver is loud it is like cow it's not a nice noise when you hit this driver it sounds tinny it sounds loud it sounds just not not a pleasant sound on I'm hitting a driver unlike the G 400 and now I love the sound of this driver for me this is the best sound in ping driver I've ever ever ever made I'm still using and playing with the LS tech version and for me that the the numbers and the flight is phenomenal with the G 400 and the LS tech but I just feel like it lacks forgiveness which you would get in the maximum driver why don't we bring them out separately it just doesn't make sense we're now at four ping drivers you know that's a lot for pink that is a lot so numbers seem to stack up it wasn't as high spin as I found it was very forgiving it was super tinny that's like this so if you can I don't know whether it's the NuForce face but it sounded awful but downwind it went like a rocket ship it went up in the air it flew it'd be great for new golfers it'd be great for higher handicappers without question but in fairness apart from the sound I could definitely game this let's get to your questions and we'll come to a little bit more of a conclusion [Music] okay so to answer some of your questions coming in and really the big one was from consumers and golfers who have actually been out on bought ping g400 and they're asking you know why is this come out and am I being kind of fobbed off a little bit and it's it's an interesting point because just put g400 max down for aside this driver g400 is excellent it's really good driver the only thing I was shocked about when it first ever came out is that it came in this four four five CC which is a smaller sized head than the average 460cc driver but what ping claimed was it was still offering massive amount of forgiveness almost maximum amount forgiveness in this smaller head but then six months down the line and you know if I'd bought this or I would be annoyed if I saw this come out because this now offers the maximum amount forgiveness this still offers from what I've tested to be a great driver you know I feel like not the ping have pulled the wool over anyone's eyes but I just feel like there was is either a place for only one of them not necessarily both of them I don't feel that the neat both of these needed to come out now whether because we're at silly season at the moment and every single manufacturer is bringing a driver out we're pink kind of lost in a little bit in that well we want to bring one out we want to bring one out to the party and that might be the case but I think the risk of that if you annoy so many people have bought the original G 400 for me that that didn't need to come out this was the one that should have come out in my opinion even though it doesn't sound as good I think for the for the average Joe who wants to just hit drive along and stray and forgiving and not massively bothered maybe about the tinny sound might not be as much of a factor that should have come out then the LS tech should have come out in the 445 CC head which would have made a lot of sense and then the SF Tech which is a straight flight tech should have also come out in this size ed so just feel like they've I feel like they've messed up truth be told I feel like they've messed up and they brought out a driver that that is very good but they're never discovered there's even a better driver and it is so characteristic of pinkness this is not a pink thing to do for me this is all the map onion we see this from other manufacturers but we don't see it from pink I feel like they've lost their way it a little bit with this idea of bringing this drive route and to answer all the guy's questions who have got a g400 driver I would be knocking on the door of ping and saying come on what's going on there why did you not bring this out a little bit earlier I would be really peed off because I think this is probably it offers more the G 400 max it offers more of a driver for the same value and if anything probably a slightly better look so 300 guys sorry to say but I think this you can't wait but this could have been a better driver but I think that's pings fault not you not the guys bought G 400 [Music] so my conclusion of the G 400 marks the first question would it go in my bag now honestly if you'd have asked me this at the start of this test what I've got in my bag just said no come on this is not gonna go in my bag because it doesn't suit me as a golf of my club head speed and way I hit the ball this does not suit me but if I'm honest and I mean this you know what I tested I hit some drives with this driver that really made me stand there and think wow that is a beast that was wise that has great ball flight the only thing that would have absolutely put me off even if the figures would have been exceptional is I don't like the sound of this driver personally it's far too thin it's not going to be for everyone so for that reason it unfortunately wouldn't be going in my bag but I must admit some of the numbers in the way I hit it I was really tempted and I think for this this is perfect for the most forgiving and I see a lot of that I do most forgiving the probably the best-looking driver that ping have ever made I just think it's it's in perfectly for that higher handicapper who wants forgiveness who wants loads of help that wants to hit high ball flight you've had a bit of loft into this and with the way it's made up mom and it's just easy to hit up in the air and I think that is what this ping Jie phone max driver is all about I didn't think I'd get as much as good and numbers as I did I was shocked but for me just a few things just unfortunate ended up putting me off from actually putting this in my bag but if you'd asked me at the start of this session I would have said no way is this going in my back gee 400 max that's the full review I feel like it came out at the wrong time I think he should have come out at the same time as all the g400 drivers and I think ping really need to think about how they have a position this and hold the hands up if they're wrong and say listen guys we should have brought it out later and oh I want to put almost compensate those guys we bought g400 with a with a somewhat of a trade-in service I think that is that is honestly something that pings should seriously consider so the next driver has a lot of great factors to it and it'd be a shame if there was this source or between g400 ug 400 max guys like watching hope you enjoyed the video if you did hit up thumbs up on let me know down below how you think of the new review style and love T thought that was my full in-depth review of the pinky phone max see you soon guys lots more drivers and other testing to come I will see you next time
Conclusion
We could rattle on all day about this club, but you just want the answer. Do you buy it or look for another driver for your bag? We'll be honest, we can't find too many things about this club that we don't love. It's a controlled golf club that has a little bit of meat in it too. It just sounded ridiculous at strike as well. We'd opt for the Max version first, it's the best driver of the G400 range.
Whether you're a high, mid, or low handicapper there are options to meet your needs with the Ping G400. However we think it's particularly suited to you guys that are at the higher end of the handicap range. You guys should seriously consider adding it to your bag. It's the most forgiving driver for beginners. We know you'll love ripping up the course off the tee with this fantastically solid driver.
Want to know our top drivers for mid handicappers? You're in luck!
