It is designed to equip you with the knowledge that should set you up to make a smart purchase. There is also essential information about some key skills that every golfer should have.
How to regrip a golf club
Regripping a golf club does not have to be a complicated process. There are two approaches that you could take when you are doing this at home. The first one would be going into it with little to no tools.
The second option would for those that have a kitted workshop or garage that they can use. Away from the rest of the bells and whistles, there are only 3 things that are required for you to successful regrip your golf clubs:
- A shape edged blade.
- A lubricating solvent.
- A tape.
The blade will be used to remove the grip from your club. The lubricant is used to make the removal of the grip easier. Tape comes in to finish off the job. It is used to close any of the loose ends.
To start removing the grip, use a knife to cut from the top to the bottom of the club. In fact, it does not matter which way you cut, as long as the full length of the grip is cut. As a safety precaution when using the blade. Make sure that there is no one within arm's length. Do not cut towards your body. The blade has a tendency moving swiftly once it has made its way through the friction of the grip.
Once the cut has been made you can usually just strip the grip off the club. If that does not work, you probably have not cut deep enough. Cut again, but this time do it slowly putting emphasis on the depth of the blade.
There is always a layer of tape that sits under the grip. You want to get rid of this as well. It will be replaced with a fresh layer. The best way to remove it is by using the scrapping technique. Run the blade from the top to the bottom of the shaft as if you are sharpening it. As previously mentioned, the blade should run away from your body and not towards it.
As soon as the tape has been removed, you can begin replacing. Use your two-sided tape. The single-sided tape would not suffice because it does not stick to the grip, once you have stuck to the shaft. Start by measuring the length of your new grip.
This is the same length of tape that you will need.
Cut the length of the tape needed. If you have a vice, you can place your club in the vice to free up your hands. If not, you can get someone to hold it or pin the club between your thighs. Wrap your tape around the grip. If you can do this in one motion, that would be ideal. Make sure that it is perfectly placed. You do not want any unevenness in texture or flatness. If you identify it, you just remove the tape and start again.
You now want to lubricate the tape to make it easier for your new grip to slip right on. Be liberal in applying the solvent. Its always better to have too much than too have too little. There is nothing that could go wrong by using too much solvent. The flip side of this is getting your grip stuck halfway.
This is when you can then install your grip. The best way to do it is by simply sliding the grip onto the shaft. The solvent will ensure that this is a smooth process. You want to do this in one motion as well. Do not stop in the middle or be slow. Once the grip is secured onto the shaft check it for any unevenness.
If all is well, as it should be, you can now clean it up. The solvent makes a mess. Get rid of it. Allow it to a few hours to settle before using the club. We would advise between 2 and 4 hours. Remember to make sure that the solvent any other residual are wiped off before letting the club dry.
What size golf clubs do I need?
We mentioned custom fitting of golf clubs earlier. There is no way we could get away without talking about how you could do some of this yourself. Most golfers just by clubs in the sizes that they come.
They do not necessarily measure them for size. This usually puts you in the awkward position where you are not sure if you have the right size, or one where you think you do, only to be proven wrong by doing some measurements.
It is best that we do these measurements now before you end up with the wrong size. To check if the golf clubs are the ideal length for you, you can use a simple technique. You can do this in your home or in any place where the ground is flat.
Place your clubhead flat on the ground while holding it. It should extend from your fore leg’s thigh onto the ground. Grip the club as if you are getting ready to take a shot. Now, bend down at the waist without moving your feet.
Once you are in this position, you should know whether your club is short, long or just the right length. A club that is too short will force you to bend down uncomfortably. One that is too long will push too far forward into you. The right size club will feel comfortable.
Do tall golfers need longer clubs?
The simple answer is yes. On average a tall person will need to use a club that matches their height. This is a general principle. There are other factors such as one’s wingspan to be considered.
Are shorter golf clubs better?
The success of the hybrid irons is at the forefront of evidence that suggests that short golf clubs are better. There is some truth in this, based on what we have noted from the hybrids. What this story does not tell you is that just because they are easier to use does not mean that shorte clubs are better. If ease of use was the metric that we are looking at, then, yes, the certainly are better.
However, when we start to consider other metrics, such as performance we realise that long irons are better in that regard.
The best way to look at it is to consider what you are planning to use the clubs for. Based on your response, you should be able to judge which of the two metrics that we mentioned is more important to you.
Another factor to consider would be the user’s level of skill. The #1-#3 irons can be impossibly difficult for a beginner. A short golf club would, therefore, be a better alternative.
We have wowed you with our top 5 picks. If you get any of these clubs, you are assured of good quality. Having read our reviews, you would also be assured of no risk of a nasty surprise.
