The King & The Golden Bear win the National 4 Ball Championship

On this day, In 1970 two of the games greatest talents combined forces too not only stun the golf world but their fellow peers. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus teamed up for the 1970 National Four Ball Team Championship played at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

Team Palmer/Nicklaus came out in the 1st round in near perfection, carding 10 birdies on the day for a 61. They were out with a score of 32 and back in 29. That outdid their previous best of 63 scored in the 1966 championship, which they won at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Throughout the event the all-star team of Palmer/Nicklaus shot rounds of 61, 67, 64, 67 and came in at -25 under par for a 259 total, winning $20,000 each.

There was a three-way tie for second place amongst the teams of: George Archer & Bobby Nichols, Bruce Crampton & Gardner Dickinson, and Sam Snead & Orville Moody who all came in at -22 under par with a 262 total. They each received $8,167 for their efforts.

The National 4 Ball Championship

This wasn’t the first time The King & The Golden Bear teamed up in this event… In 1966 they joined up to win in the same event and would defend this same title in 1970.

The National Team Championship, which was played under a variety of names, was a team golf tournament played from 1965 to 1972. It was an official PGA Tour event from 1968 to 1972
