Our top 5 Best Value Golf Balls

We love a bargain just as much as the next person does. So, with this in mind, we went out to find golf balls that offer the best balance between price and quality. The idea was to make sure that quality was not traded for the sake of penny-pinching.

The process saw us go through countless online golf forums, golf shops and golf courses. Our research was focused on getting those that know a bargain when they see one to point us in the right direction. Once we had a list of potentially suitable golf balls we then tested them.

It did not stop there. To get a more detailed account of these balls we went back to the places we started the research. This time we were after product-specific reviews. There are a lot of opinions out there.

The information that was gathered through this process is what landed up with just 5 balls that we believe to be the best value golf balls.

1. Wilson. Smart Core Golf Ball - TOP PICK

Wilson Smart Core Golf Ball

Our Honest Star Rating

Wilson Smart Core Golf Balls are widely used by golfers across the world. These balls are renowned for delivering distance and on long shots.

This is achieved by reducing the amount of spin that is generated when using a driver or long irons. Your shots are long and straight. The inside of the golf ball uses Wilson’s Smart Core. It reacts to the player’s swing speed.

There is more spin generated on short shots which helps you get better control on the green.

Every ball has two layers. A durable ionomer cover is used to enhance playability. This is a cover that is used by many golf ball manufacturers. They love it because of its capability to give you durability and balanced performance on the green.

It is consistent through all sorts of conditions that you use the ball in. There are 432 dimples on each ball. These dimples make for the best aerodynamic performance. They facilitate the golf ball’s path through the air by reducing air pressure resistance.

This is a distance golf ball. Being able to cut through the air allows it to live up to this bill. There is a firm response when you strike the ball on the tee. The feel is enhanced as you strike the ball on the green.

You can purchase this in a pack that has 24 balls. For the price that they are sold for, you cannot possibly go wrong. This ball can be purchased in white. There are more visible colours available, but they are more difficult to come by. The dimension of the product is  5×3.5×3.5 inches.

The approximate weight of the product is about 2 pounds. There is a compression of 85 on the ball.

2. Nitro Ultimate Distance Golf Ball

Nitro Ultimate Distance Golf Ball

Our Honest Star Rating

Do not let the look fool you. These balls will give most balls a run for their money. The Nitro Ultimate Distance Golf Ball is approved by the USGA.

This is something that may not need to be mentioned for most golf balls, but this does not fall the conventional look that you will find with most balls. Beyond this distance, which is made obvious by the name of the ball. You simply cannot miss them.

There is an emphasis on not only designing balls that go far, but those that you can see in flight as well as on the ground. This is something that they achieved. There is maximum retention of energy from your swing. The energy is then transferred to the golf ball.

Between this high energy transfer and the super reactive titanium core that is inside the ball, distance seems to be an inevitable output. They have also reduced the amount of spin that is generated as you drive the ball.

This is something that also feeds into that energy retention aspect.

Once the ball has taken off at high speed, you will also be pleased to note that it has aerodynamic features in place to facilitate longer carry. The symmetrical dimple design increases the balls’ lift. There is much less drag. As a result, the ball goes further. With a compression level of 90, it was never in doubt.

This ball is a two-piece golf ball which has a reactive core of titanium. The outer cover is made of Lithium Surlyn makes the ball virtually indestructible. Well, at least that is what the manufacturers claim. This is not something that could be substantiated by either our research or through testing.

This ball comes in three colours, orange, white or yellow. They come in a pack that has 15 balls in it. The dimensions of the product are 8.7×5.2×1.9 inches. The approximate weight of the product is about 1.2 pounds.

3. Srixon Soft Feel Golf Balls

Srixon Soft Feel Golf Ball

Our Honest Star Rating

Srixon introduces the 11th generation of the soft feel golf ball. It is designed for incredible distance and softer feel. This ball is made with a softer cover and lower compression core.

It has been engineered to benefit golfers of all swing speeds. The impressive part of the ball is the energetic gradient growth core provides explosive power off the tee.

Your shots will be seen to gain a higher initial velocity. The energetic gradient core becomes progressively firmer as you further from the centre of the core. It maintains softness on impact. You will still get that distance that you are after.

The aerodynamic technology employed on this is that of using a 338 dimple pattern. This is the same pattern that was used in the Z-Star balls. It gives you exceptional airflow which limits the effects of drag.

This results in a more efficient flight that cuts through the wind. One of the areas that this dimple pattern will do well is in windy conditions. The ball seems largely unaffected by the wind, in comparison to similar golf balls.

Even when faced with immense wind resistance, it is still able to travel through the air, maintaining flight.

The outer layer of the ball is finished off with Ionomer. This is a cover that is both thin and soft. It responds well to shots on the green. You will get the spin that you require to perform well in your short game.

The New Srixon Soft Feel Golf Ball is available in two colours, Soft White and Tour Yellow. At a 60 compression, it is the ultimate all-rounder for golfers with low-mid clubhead speeds and that for those that prefer a softer feeling golf ball.

There are 12 balls in a pack. The dimensions of the products are 7×5×1 inches and the approximate weight of the product is about 0.16 ounces.

4. Callaway Golf Supersoft Golf Balls

Callaway Supersoft Golf Balls Prior Generation

Our Honest Star Rating

This ball is a long and straight distance ball that is incredibly soft. Its ultra-low compression reduces spin for increased distance and low spin results in a straight ball flight.

You’ll be impressed to know that this ball is covered by new tri-ionomer cover formulation. This formulation increases softness for better feel and more shot-stopping wedge spin. This cover also increased greenside control.

The ball has six colours, Green, Orange, Pink, Red, Yellow and White. Each pack has 12 balls. The dimensions of the product are 7.9×7.9×3.9  inches. The approximate weight of the product is 1 pound.

5. Snell Get Some Golf Balls

Snell Get Some Golf Balls

Our Honest Star Rating

The Snell Get Some Golf Ball is that lower-tier ball which every company makes. It is a high-performance 2-pc golf ball that offers excellent feel and control.

The most impressive thing of this ball is the large, soft low compression core which allows for the ball to have very low spin rates which increase distance and creates fewer hooks and slices.

This is important to know that it is covered by a thin, soft Surlyn that contributes to the soft feel of the ball. The core cover combination helps golfers get the ball in the air easier and reduced spin rates for straighter shots from tee to green.

You have to know that the main premise behind the Snell Golf brand is that they sell direct without having to pay for player sponsorships, so they are cheaper. This ball is approved by the USGA standards. This is legal for tournament play.

The Snell Get Some Golf Ball is available in two colours. One is White and other is Yellow. There are 12 balls in a pack. The dimensions of the product are 8×4×6 inches and the approximate weight of the product is about 1 pound.

If you don’t generate enough spin and need the extra flight I would recommend the Snell ball. You will probably benefit from better control and performance without having to break the bank.

Best Value Golf Balls Buyer’s Guide

We have delivered some incredible value golf balls for you. Perhaps you have yet to make up your mind? That is fine, there are a few things that one may need to take into consideration before arriving at their decision. To help you with this process we have created the buyer’s guide. This guide is made to offer you valuable tips and information that you can make use of when considering these golf balls and any others that you look at. You will be able to get answers to some of the questions that may have come up as you read through the reviews. It may perhaps even provide you with some questions that would not have occurred to you.

Do range balls go as far as normal golf balls?

Most of us love a good knock on the range. This is the one place where we can get some great distance on the ball. It is then very disappointing to find that you may not be able to carry that form onto the golf course. The flip side of the equation is that there are chips and spins that you may find yourself struggling to execute on the range, but just seem to work out when you take it onto the golf course.

As far as distance is concerned, you will find that in most cases range balls will not perform as well as a normal golf ball. This can be intentionally rigid to be the case. If you are on a range that has minimum space, the balls will be difficult to get any flight out of. It is not your technique that is letting you down this time.

What are birdie balls?

The birdie ball is an award-winning practice golf ball that is designed to be played off the golf course. What makes it different is that it does not go very far when you strike it. It gives you a distance of no more than 40 yards. Did we mention that it looks nothing like the traditional golf balls that we all know. The closest thing that it resembles is a ring. This does not stand as a deterrent to the way that the balls work.

The limited distance is what gives you much more versatility of where you can play these balls. Your garden can become your driving range. They are also much easier to carry around if you wanted to take them to the pack with you. You can place several balls on the shaft of your club.

What will surprise you is how much they feel and respond like the real thing. When you strike the ball, the sound and flight mimic that of a traditional golf ball. Minus the longer flight of course.

They are made out of polymer. Or in the manufacturer’s words “super polymer”. Any concerns of durability can be shelved. These are the real deal.

What are limited flight golf balls?

Limited flight golf balls are exactly what the phrase would suggest. They are golf balls that do not travel as far as you would see with a traditional golf ball. The birdie balls that we mentioned above are an example of a limited flight golf ball. They are designed to provide you with balls that you can work on your technique with.

Over the years they have made great strides in improvement. They have come from being plastic toys, for lack of a better phrase to describe them, to what we know them to be today. We now have limited flight golf balls that feel like real golf balls when you strike them. This is an important aspect to have on a practice golf ball. If you can emulate the real thing, you are better prepared to then transfer the skills that you develop in practice.

If you have played at a range, you are certain to have used limited flight golf balls. The speed and flight of the balls are reduced to removing the usual speed cores that you will find in most balls. There is also less emphasis put on the aerodynamic side of things. It does not need to cut through the air.

Can you change your golf ball on the green?

It is not often that you would find yourself in a situation in which you may need to change your golf ball while you are on the green. There are rules to govern this. These were put in place to avoid situations in which golfers would change golf balls based on their performance or lack thereof. The USGA has made it clear what goes and what doesn’t in this case. Rules 15-1 and 15-2 were put in place for this very purpose. They say that a golfer is required to finish the hole that they are playing using the ball that they started that hole with. The inference is that you could bring in a new ball after you have completed a hole, before going into the next one.

The exceptions to this rule are covered in Rules 26-1, 27-1 and 28. These state that you are permitted to substitute a golf ball if it is stuck in a water hazard (26-1), lost in the woods (27-1) or unplayable (28). For a ball to be judged to be unplayable it has to be falling apart. A crack does not suffice. Going against this rule will lead to a 2 stroke penalty or the loss of a hole.

Can you leave the flag in when putting?

Most of us have grown up in an era where you are expected to lift the flag out of the hole before taking a putt shot. This has since been changed. The new rules that were put in place at the start of this year state that a player may choose to lift the flag out of the hole or to leave it in there. There is a lot of time that is spent on things that are not necessary. The lifting of the flag is one such thing.

Delaying the game while getting the flag out will also mean that the flag would need to be restored after you have taken your shot. On the surface, it does not seem like much. It could use up a minute or two at most. However, when we consider the larger implication, we start to see that there is some wisdom in the new rule. If we can save a minute of each golfer’s time, we would have saved several hours of the golf course’s time throughout the day. Some may view the placement of the flag as a practice that will make putting a bit easier for players. The playing field is level. It is not as though this will be a privilege reserved for a select few.

Final Words

Buying golf balls can be a deeply personal thing. These are balls that you will be using for a while. Unless you lose them, of course. We do our bit to help out, but the final decision should always rest with the golfer. Which one of these value balls do you have an eye on? You have been given 5 incredible ones that you can choose from. These are balls that are backed by the assurance of our research and testing. If you read the reviews, you will know why we think they deserve their place on our list. You will also be aware of some of the things that we think they could improve on. These are all things that should be factored into your decision.

To arrive on value you should consider both performance and durability. A ball that performs but does not last long is not very durable. One that does not perform but lasts an eternity is of no use at all. Getting value is about arriving on a product that you feel is the best of these two worlds. We would encourage you to allow yourself the time to read every product’s review. This will provide you with the insight that is needed to compare them. You may find that you like another ball that is not the one that we fancied as the best one. We promise not to take offence. If you are not sure, our top pick is always a safe bet. Happy golfing!
