Our Top 5 Best Golf Ball For 20 Handicappers

We refuse to take manufacturers at their word. Our goal is to put each ball through the paces.

At the end of each test, we either prove or disprove each of their claims. It also gives us the opportunity to find some great characteristics as well as potential flaws in everything that we try out.

You will also find our buyer’s guide to being of some help in your pursuit for that all elusive golf ball. We have here a selection of five golf balls for you. Without further ado.

Here they are.

1. Callaway Golf Superhot Bold Matte Golf Balls

Callaway Golf Superhot Bold Matte Golf Balls

Our Honest Star Rating

Most golfers will agree that distance matters.

With a bit of control and skill, you will be landing the ball well in the green.

There is no better way to set yourself up for an enthralling game. The Superhot golf balls are made with this in mind.

They are designed with aerodynamic technology that improves flight. It reduces drag and increases lift.

Depending on one what your golfing goals are, it’s a win-win situation. You either get to see your drive go a long way each time or better yet an overall improvement on your entire game.

Besides the distance that we have mentioned, you get a moderate feeling ball. This is ideal. When balls are too soft, some of your swing speed goes to waste.

When they are too hard, you get the same sort of result. Moderate is a good place to be. Playing at a 20 handicap, you will be pleased to know that these balls have high forgiveness.

Your shots will be straighter.

Where construction is concerned. This is made up of 3 pieces and a soft cover that goes over the top. The cover is made of ionomer.

They are available to purchase in green, yellow, red or orange. The colours are all very vivid, and visible of the course. This makes the balls very easy to locate.

As with other Callaway golf balls, the compression is not made publicly available. It is difficult to understand their reasoning for that. T

heir official statement is that it would possibly lead to confusion when it comes to the actual feel of the ball.

On the green, we observed enhanced ball control. There was just enough spin to manoeuvre the ball as you’d like. Slicing significantly decreases. As good brand golf balls go, this is fairly priced.

The red and yellow are usually at the lower end of the pricing scale.

Each pack comes with 15 golf ball in it.

  • Various colours to choose from.

  • Relatively inexpensive.
  • Very forgiving.
  • A great pick for 20 handicappers.

  • Can be difficult to track in the rough if you miss it in flight.

2. Wilson Smart Core Golf Ball

Wilson Smart Core Golf Ball

Our Honest Star Rating

The idea behind Wilson’s Smart Core is that we all have different swing speed but our performance should not be adversely affected by it.

What the Smart Core does is offer an intelligent adaptation to suit your swing speed.

This results in a great feel on impact, as well as enhanced distance with every shot. There is a firm and soft response mechanism.

The firm response is felt off the tee where swing speed is high. Your soft response mechanism will kick in when playing around the green.

Now that you have distance covered, you will be pleased to know that the Smart Core Golf Ball also caters for your short game. This is done mainly be adding more spin and control to your shots.

That’s more spin on the green, and less spin on the longer shots. This is usually a very difficult balance to achieve.

These balls came onto the market in 2017. They are a cheaper and soft alternative to the often overpriced ones that most people buy. You will struggle to find a more beginner to the intermediate player-friendly ball.

At the pricing point, there is less of a concern for stray shots that will end up with balls going missing. This, of course, is part and parcel of the game.

Each pack contains 24 balls. They are further divided into sets 8 of 3. It just helps to keep track of things.

The colour is not the best for tracking balls that go astray. Again, that is nothing new for the white balls. However, considering that other brands offer various options, I do not see why this is not the case here.

For the more technical ones, the compression rate of these is 85. They are suitable for players of 20 handicap and players as low as 3 handicap.

This is based on what we have tested. Strictly speaking, your swing speed will have a bearing on this as well.

  • You simply cannot beat the price point of these for the quality provided.
  • React well to different swing speed due to the Smart Core feature.
  • You’ll get good distance.
  • Reasonable performance on the green.

  • They tend to feel much higher compressed to golfers with high swing speed.

3. Nitro Ultimate Distance Golf Ball

Nitro Ultimate Distance Golf Ball

Our Honest Star Rating

If you are looking to spend as little as possible, these may be the ideal golf balls for you.

The Nitro Ultimate Distance Golf Balls do exactly what their name says that they do.

They travel a long distance off the tee. This is due to the super reactive 2 piece titanium core tournament construction.

It gives you enhanced speed from the energy that is transferred from the head of the golf club on strike. The balls have minimal backspin on long shots. This adds up to more distance.

You will notice that there is a stable flight off the tee when you hit these balls. They have an aerodynamic and symmetrical dimple design that works to increase the lift and lower the drag.

Your shots go a long way.

They are sold as having a great feel on the green.

The outer layer is cut proof. It is made out of Dupont Lithium Surlyn which is famed for providing great durability. As a whole, the design conforms to USGA rules.

Each box comes with 5 smaller boxes with three balls in each. That makes for a grand total of 15 balls.

There is barely anything else that you can ask for at the pricing point. The compression on these is 90.

That leaves reasonable room for you to generate some distance off your shots with swing speed.

You can purchase these in white, yellow or orange. As a whole, if you find that you are bound to lose golf balls frequently these will help.

For a 20 handicapper still finding your way around the game, having balls that you can afford to lose will help. Nothing will knock you further back than losing balls that you paid an arm and a leg for it.

There is a good balance between the price and what you get from the balls.

  • Available in vivid, wildly visible colours.
  • They deliver enhanced distances off the tee.
  • Beginner and average player-friendly.
  • Reasonable performance on the green.

  • Definitely not the ball to take with you as you improve.
  • Very hard to control on a long shot.

4. Callaway Chrome Soft Golf Balls

Callaway Chrome Soft Golf Balls

Our Honest Star Rating

At 20 handicap, ball speed matters.

You are still looking to find your range as far as swing speed is concerned.

The Callaway Chrome Soft Golf Balls work a treat in this regard.

They are designed to give your fast speed on impact. If you are struggling with getting too much swing off the tee, they will resolve that as well.

Once you are on the green, you get that spin control back. Getting your ball from within five yards to the hole is the best part about using these balls.

They made of 4 pieces that are put together to great effect. There is a mantle layer as well as a Tour urethane cover.

This ball is designed to give you that proven tour performance. The dual-core construction enhances the distance that you get off the drive, gives you more control when using mid-irons as well as short irons and wedges.

That is a better level of performance in every facet of the game.

When driving off the tee, the low ball compression and the soft outer core make for straight shots that go further.

You can purchase these in white, yellow, yellow/black as well as a white/red Truvis patterned ball. If you are looking for visibility on your drives, I would urge you to go with the yellow ones.

The white/red Truvis pattern ball is said to be designed for visibility and enhanced focus.

Another factor that is often neglected is how much mis-hit forgiveness you will get out of these.

While on the green, you will find that the urethane layer helps with shot control. It has great contact and feel on the ground. You will get good spin on your chip shots.

Each box comes with a dozen golf balls in it.

  • Good spin control on the green.
  • Good value for money.

  • Some 2016 balls have been sold as 2017 models.
  • The white/red Truvis can be difficult to find.

5. Wilson Titanium Ball

Wilson Titanium Golf Ball

Our Honest Star Rating

Our final pick is the Wilson Titanium Ball.

It is the result of their patented technology that makes use of titanium bonds.

The titanium bonds work as a catalyst for energy transfer.

When you strike the ball, all of the energy that you generate on impact is transferring in the direction that you are hitting it.

This obviously means that you get more results from the effort that you put in.

You get maximum energy transfer, maximum initial velocity and therefore maximum distance as well.

The construction of the ball is a sturdy two-piece combination. They are made up of an inner core as well as the outer core. It is finished off with a Surlyn cover to gloss over the top.

Not only does it give the ball a soft feel. It also ensures that the ball is durable.

Your shots will travel further and straighter. There is significantly less backspin generated off the tee. Although there is some control retained once you hit the green.

These come in at the lower end of the pricing scale. That is not to say that there is anything lacking in the quality of the balls.

The rubber and titanium combination definitely keeps the costs lower while producing a brilliant product.

Each pack comes with 18 balls. They are manufactured with distance in mind, which is very important for a 20 handicapper. As your skills develop, you will find that these balls will no longer be adequate.

The beauty of it is that they have a great part to play in your game for a while. They do not have enough bite on the green, which would affect the game of a more seasoned player.

Having said that, I do not know if Wilson could change this one at all. With the price point at which they come in, it would be expecting too much.

Beyond performance, if you are likely to hit a stray shot every now and again, as most 20 handicappers are, the price is a saving grace. You can afford to lose a few of these without going bankrupt.

A box of 18 should take most people are while to get through.

Our handy guide to the Best Golf Balls For Average Golfers features more great products like this.

  • Incredible energy transfer on impact.
  • Comes in at an incredibly low price.
  • Great for increasing your distance off the tee.
  • Brilliant for beginner, mid handicappers and improving players.

  • Do not offer as much control off the tee.

Buyer’s Guide for Golf Balls for 20 Handicappers

There are a few things that we considered when looking at what golf balls would be the best of players of 20 handicap. We wanted to make sure that your performance would not be adversely affected by the introduction of a new golf ball. It was also important that you would see clear progress in your game. Things such as the distance that you would get off the tee and your game on the green were just as important.

Your current all-round game is not to be ignored in this conversation. The ball that is best for you should be one that meets you where you are and helps you maintain that level or better yet, take you to the next level. Getting better may not matter as much to some players. For instance, most senior player could not care less what their overall score is

Swing Speed

Your swing speed will generally determine how far the ball will travel on impact. It is the speed at which your arm moves from a lifted point to the point at which it strikes the golf ball.

The faster your swing speed is, the further the ball will go. Other factors that would impact this include the loft of the ball, the aerodynamics of air resistance and flight.

Range of swing speed

Most pro golfers have a swing speed of over 115mph on average. They go as low as 105mph for the top 200 players. The fastest swing speed recorded is by Cameron Champ who clocked in a strike of over 135mph. His average is an impressively high 128mph off 80 attempts. That is obviously the higher end of the scale. You will highly unlikely be able to compete with that. Having said that, there are a lot of golfers who have impressive swing speeds but lack in the overall game.

There is usually a correlation between swing speed and performance. This is not to say that if you have great swing speed, your score will match this. However, pairing good swing speed with control of shots will go a long way. When it isn’t well controlled you may get the distance in the wrong direction. Most players spend years working on their swing. Not necessarily the speed, by the pattern of their swing. This is a key feature.

Slicing and Ball Loss

Slicing occurs when the ball is not hit with the right part of the golf club. When you strike the ball off the edge, it tends to stray off in an unintended direction. This is what is referred to as slicing.

Most players have to deal with this at one point or another. As your game improves, you tend to encounter this less. To avoid slicing, it is important to work on your swing pattern and the direction.

Once you start catching more of the ball with the club’s sweet spot, slicing becomes a thing of the past. The less you slice your shots, the more satisfaction you’ll get out of your game. You will also lose fewer balls. The latter point is not a perfect science. Slicing may at times mean that your ball does not travel a long distance. This makes it easier for you to locate it.

Visibility off the Tee

Being able to see the ball in flight is very important. There are two factors to this. The first one is that you would be able to track the ball in flight and use this as a yardstick to see how well your swing is working.

There are not many feelings as satisfying as seeing your golf ball flying in the right direction. This is also something that plays in the second part. If you can track your ball in flight, it makes tracking where it lands easier as well.

The second aspect of this will save you some money. Every golfer loses some balls when they play. The ball lands on all sorts of terrain. Some of the terrains makes it very difficult to find a ball once it has landed.

There are various colours that you can make use of to make the ball stand out in an area that it could so easily have blended into. The most popular colours for enhanced include yellow and orange. If they have fewer patterns or writing on them, they tend to be easier to find.

What does 20 Handicap shoot?

A 20 handicapper will shoot between 85-90 on most courses. Handicap will be somewhat dependent on the course that you play on. Shooting very low scores on an easy course may have you thinking that your handicap is much lower than it really is. This is often referred to as vanity scoring. It is when a player pats themselves on the back for doing something that could not be replicated under normal conditions.

The best way to keep track of your handicap is to calculate it. You should consider including the course difficulty index if you know what it is. To work this out by yourself you would need to use your golf scorecard.

Take note of your last few scores. You will need to use these to work it out. Ideally, you should be using more than 10 but less than 21. This is not a strict rule. Not sticking with these numbers just complicates this a bit. For 20 results, you would use your best 10 scores.

Add up your 10 scores then divide them by the number of holes recorded. If you are using the score of your best 10 holes, you will need to then divide the total by 10. This will give you your average differential. Multiply your average differential by 0.96.

Finally, simply this to one decimal place. That is your handicap.

Final Words

Our top 5 picks will have provided you will some great golf balls suitable for 20 handicappers. We have also included a buyer’s guide to help you find your own balls. It covers some of the important things that we thought should be considered when buying a golf ball that is ideal for your handicap.

Be sure to consider your golfing goals as well. A player that is satisfied with their handicap will not have the same golf ball needs as a player that is still looking to improve their handicap.

We covered:

  1. The importance and impact that swing speed has on your overall game.
  2. We looked at the causes of ball slicing.
  3. We considered ways to ensure that the balls are widely visible off and tee and once they land on the green.

Other factors were explored as part of each ball’s review to ensure that they were kept in context. Between these two, you should be well on your way to picking an incredible golf ball. Happy Golfing!
